On Oct.27, the Women and Gender Studies and the UNCG Dance Department held a performance as a part of the Love Your Body Week. The hilarious and risqué show was titled Queerlesque.

The Queerlesque FaceBook page claimed that the goal of the event was to create “a fun way for both performers and audience members to engage in a discussion regarding bodies, the gendering of bodies and expressions of sexuality … ”

Alyssa Haney was one of the coordinators who put this show on.

Haney has been dancing since she was three, trained heavily in classical ballet and modern technique. She has received her BFA in Dance and History from Tulane University in New Orleans and began performing in burlesque, under the moniker Fleur Delice, shortly after she graduated.

Haney is now pursing her MA in Dance Theories and Practice here at UNCG, which includes a burlesque workshop that she holds every semester.

“The workshops are open to any UNCG student, usually during the weekend, and no dance experience is needed,” said Haney.

The show consisted of two hilarious emcees, Stephany Rayburn and Sarah Dove to kick off the night with humor that carried throughout the performances.

Performers (in order with their show name): Dominique Eason (Midnight Mirage), Camilla Smigo (Black Widow), Will Indermaur (Wonderful Willy), Alyssa Haney (Fleur Delice), Zachary Parrish (Richard Xeslana), and Whitney Akers (Myss Whitness).

The Q & A session afterwards addressed questions about the body image of a dancer and the path of burlesque. This was a great way to kick off Love Your Body Week.
