Jack + Eliza – “No Wonders”

Indie rock has been blessed yet again with young voices swimming in simple harmonies. Cue the jangly guitars that have you turning crooked circles around your bedroom and pouring red wine into coffee mugs. The NYC duo sound like surf disciples of mixed lineage, evoking sounds of both Beach Boys and Shins through conversations that draw from the sweetest places in their respective ranges. The five-track EP became available on iTunes this past Friday, and makes for $6 well spent.

Ty Segall – “Manipulator”

NPR said it best: “It’s a shame that the rock record of the summer had to surface at the end of the season.” Fortunately we all have the right amount of happy-go-lucky angst this record supports any day of the year. San Fran native Segall shreds and croons and is just so clearly happy to be rocking out. And the man is experienced – “Manipulator” is his seventh to date in a series of annual releases since the launch of his solo career in 2008.

Start with – “Tall Man Skinny Lady”,“Susie Thumb”

Tennis – “Ritual in Repeat”

The voice of Alaina Moore is a warm hug of a sound. Like on past releases from she and her husband, the track arrangement is versatile and cozy, and stays true to their vigilant promise to the surf-pop genre. Their melodies and instrumentation are purely nostalgic, and have gotten increasingly mature since their 2011 debut “Cape Dory” – although all their discography is certainly worth investigating.

Start with – “I’m Callin’”, “Wounded Heart”

Karen O – “Crush Songs”

Have you ever listened to the Yeah Yeah Yeahs and thought, “Woah lady! Chill the heck out!” This is her very first solo album – which is actually a compilation of “low-fi bedroom tunes” recorded between ‘06 and ‘07. Lyrically it’s a little depressing, narrating the negatives of her love life at the time in both things that had happened to her and things she was anticipating. But of course, between sparsely-scattered fuzzed-out guitar riffs is her voice and it’s amazing and raw – whether she’s wailing, yowling or barely above a whisper.

Start with – “Ooo”, “Visits”

Holy Ghost Tent Revival – “Right State of Mind”

This bluesy folk-rock powergroup was founded back in 2007 on the campus of Greensboro College. Since then they’ve made themselves kings of creative indie rock, which in the past meant rootsy dance parties and an invincible horn line. On this record they pull their listeners in new directions – from zippy Lou Reed guitar punches to way-mellowed-out driving music, all the while reminding us they’re not taking themselves too seriously.

Start with – “Right State of Mind”, “Trouble With the Truth”
