It has been a long semester of web issues for our paper, but finally we have online content. It is also important to note that we have moved. No longer will we be located at our old uncg-carolinian address, but we are now at http://www.carolinianuncg.com.

In the process of designing the new site, we wanted a template that would allow for interaction, as well as being able to show a variety of stories from different sections in the same place. With the new slider bar we are able to do this.

While we have a basic design in place (sections at the top, twitter widget on the side and a banner), this is only the beginning. We are currently working on ideas for making the site more interactive and allowing more student involvement (polls, comments, etc.).

The biggest challenge as a weekly newspaper is keeping our news section current. The new website will allow us to post stories quicker, so students do not have to wait an entire week to learn what went down at the last faculty senate meeting.

We are also working on ways to have special online content that will be released before Wednesday, so our readers do not have to wait an entire week to read something new.

The website is most important because it is an easier way for students to be informed. It is increasingly frustrating when I attend student forums and there is always that one student who walks to the microphone to ask why there is no transparency at UNCG.

Perhaps this is sometimes true, but 9 times out of 10, the student’s next question will be something that they would have known the answer to if they read The Carolinian. We have beat reporters who cover faculty senate, campus forums and weekly SGA meetings, all of which have information that is important for students to know about.

Now there are no more excuses.  While students may not know where all our distribution points are, the website allows an easy way to access our stories.

The site has every article published this semester, and in the next few months will also feature an archives section with stories from last year. Many of those articles are still very relevant today.

So far the web traffic on the new site has been great, but can always get better. Whether you want to be informed or just read interesting stories, visit http://www.carolinianuncg.com or pick up our paper around campus. I promise you will not be disappointed.
