Last Thursday at the Blind Tiger, Greensboro hosted some of the best blues and funk bands around. Chit Nasty, along with The Family and Fat Cheek Kat, filled the venue with energy and soul.
Chit Nasty, although having car troubles on the way to the show, entered with energy and were eager to play. On a weekend tour, the band visited Winston-Salem on Friday playing at Bull’s Tavern. Saturday, they brought their blues to the mountains, playing at Murphy’s Pub in Boone. The band is celebrating a soon to be released album which shares the same name as its final track, “Brand New”. Christian Fourshee-Green, Chit Nasty’s singer-songwriter and keyboardist called the release an advent.
“It’s a blend,” said Christian, “of funk, soul, and rock and roll.” Guitarst John Faltass added, “I couldn’t be more excited. My life can be dedicated to writing albums after this one. We’ve been working on this one for two years. It’s awesome to look at where the album was, and where it is now.” This album, Faltass explained, will give the group us a chance to further their musical aspirations.
Fans of Chit Nasty know the band is passionate about music. Their performance on stage is lively, with Fourshee-Green dancing to his band’s beats. Last year, the group played at Shakori Hills Grassroots music festival, a performance that they were very grateful for.
“It was a blessing man, it was crazy.” Fourshee-Green seemed very fervent about his audience at Shakori. “A lot of people love music but only a few make a big effort to go see shows. It’s the live happening.” Christian seemed very in touch with his audience during Thursday’s performance, and talked extensively on the importance of college radio and the honesty of music. As an intern with Powderfinger Promotions, a company for college and independent radio publicity, he realized what most artists truly want.

“The entire band performing and dancing on stage at the Blind Tiger.”
“You have a dream for your music, you want to hear it on the radio. The CD just becomes merchandise, and that breaks my heart.” He noted that independent promoters like Powderfinger make sure artists are getting actual radio play.
Chit Nasty has been featured on WUAG 103.1 and have played live sets on WQFS 90.9 and although Christian’s loyalties lie with independent radio, he seemed to understand the appeal of Top 40 radio. “There are people in the top forty world who do well,” he said. “You can’t deny the epic-ness of a good live show. And if you can make people dance during a live show, why not from the CD?”
Fourshee-Green alluded to future creative endeavors. He has already started seeking perfect balance between rock and electronic by sending out his music to independent DJ’s for remixing. Chit Nasty already features an interesting mix of techno and funk. Their ambient harmonies shine of gospel music, and the keyboards are always catchy. But as the band moves forward into uncharted territory, Christian knows one thing will remain the same: “One of the best aspects of our shows are songs you can sing along to.”
