UNC-Greensboro’s board of trustees met last Wednesday and Thursday to discuss a miscellany of items.

One area of focus was the second phase of Spartan Village Student Housing.

The Chancellor informed the board of the project’s second phase in September 2014.

The project calls for apartment-style residence halls that house approximately 330 beds.

30,000 square feet will be reserved for mixed-use retail, such as Jefferson Suite’s Bojangles and Spartan Village’s Subway.

The project will cost— including the necessary land acquisition— around $48 million.

Capital Facilities Foundation, Inc. (CFF) will develop the project under a 30-year lease with UNCG.

The lease allows CFF to secure financing for construction, which out of the total $48 million is expected to cost roughly $39 million.

The land acquisition should cost roughly $8.5 million.

The lease requires authorization by the UNCG board of trustees, the UNC board of governors and the Council of State with a signature of lease by Governor McCrory.

UNCG’s board of trustees voted in favor of the lease last Thursday.

From here it will go on the UNC board of governors.

The proposed location is across the street from the new police station and pedestrian underpass at the intersection of Glenwood Avenue and Lee Street.

UNCG officials argue that the proposed location creates a critical link between the new recreational center in the west and the first phase of Spartan Student housing in the east.

The projected occupancy date is Fall 2017.
