Brittany Hudson, a junior double majoring in media studies and business administration  is the current vice president of UNCG’s Student Government Association (SGA) and will assume the position of president next academic year. The position was uncontested.

Hudson told The Carolinian that her main goal is to enhance and enrich the overall student experience at UNCG.

She has been a member of SGA since the fall of 2012 and has had multiple experiences working with different organizations such as Campus Activity Board (CAB), Student Abroad Peer Ambassador (SAPA), and Students of Action (SOA).

Hudson believes that it is important to be relatable as a president, saying, “I am a student first and can relate to any aspects of student life at this university.”

Although she has pride in being someone who can relate and understand the students of this campus, she wants to make sure the same can be said about the senate. By having a mutual understanding between the student body and SGA, she believes that trust can be built. The three ways she plans on reaching her goals next year it is to restore connection with the student body.

Hudson hopes to restore the faith students have in SGA. Admitting that SGA has had past struggles, as does any organization, she wants to start at the heart of the source and better prepare the senators at SGA. She would like to have an initiation ceremony for the senators upon election, which administration, faculty and staff would be invited to attend. Hudson argues this will allow new senators to familiarize themselves with those people with whom they will be working closely.

She is also making it a requirement for new senators to attend an orientation where they will receive the training needed to be in SGA. Although some argue UNCG is an apolitical campus, Hudson says that many other campuses are also apolitical and neither she nor the senators can make people care about things.

Hudson argues that she will do her job “by taking in concerns from students, bringing them to administration, holding forums, sending out surveys and being visible around campus as a source of communication and a resource for my constituents.”With UNCG’s strategic plan reaching its final stages of formalization during the start of her term Hudson again expresses that she can’t make the student body do anything but she will “stress the importance and make sure we as students uphold it.”

With the search for a new chancellor, Hudson does not find the expanded confidential group necessary because, as she argues, “Adding more people to the process, presents a bigger risk of confidentiality issues.”

She trusts that the chancellor search committee will make the best decision for the university. For the new chancellor she wants to make sure they are engaged with the student body as much as possible, at least 1-2 hours per week, whether that be setting up office hours or simply walking around campus conversing with students.

“Our students should feel like they know our chancellor and our chancellor should know the students,” Hudson added.

Hudson, as president, will be a voting member of UNCG’s Board of Trustees. Furthermore, she will have monthly meetings with the chancellor. The meeting will consist of discussing what has been happening at UNCG.

Hudson also wants to “take to social media in presenting all new information and ideas pertaining to the university in a more captivating or engaging way.”

Lastly, she wants to connect the five colleges in Greensboro. She would like for all five colleges, N.C. A &T, Bennett, Greensboro College, Guilford Tech and UNCG to have a meeting once a quarter with the student government members of each school to discuss issues as well as potential collaborative projects.

Hudson explained that after her president term is over she wants to make sure her hard work has paid off by stating, “I would like to leave SGA in a condition that allows me a certain comfort knowing that any one of the senators will be able to take over as president and vice president of this great organization.”
