UNC-Greensboro’s new student government president for the 2015-2016 year, Brittany Hudson, has plans for the Student Government Association (SGA).
Coming into her fourth year as a SGA member, she expressed enthusiasm to be able to take over this position and execute her many plans for the students of UNCG. She has served on every branch and board within SGA during her time at UNCG.
In regards to her first plans for SGA, Hudson stated that she intends to hold the senators of SGA accountable for reaching out to the students they are assigned to represent in order to address their concerns and opinions.
She articulated that the reputation of the student government as a whole may have lost prestige and professionalism over the years, and she plans to construct guidelines in hope of bringing some of it back.
She also stated she plans to encourage collaborations with other organizations on campus this year.
Not only is she planning to collaborate with organizations on campus, but she also wants to combine ideas with other Student Government Associations at surrounding schools in Greensboro.
Hudson and her executive cabinet met with the executive cabinet of N.C. A&T University to converse about the ways they could improve the city of Greensboro as students, for students.
Hudson explained that she never imagined she would become president and felt she was inexperienced for the role. She decided to “stand up and run uncontested” in her words. She claims, in retrospect, she was experiencing those emotions because she did not know her own strength.
When asked about the challenges she predicts she will face, Hudson said one issue might be having to remind everyone, herself included, that she is only one person and cannot take on more than she can handle.
She clarified that before she is anything, she is a student, and her education comes first. With that being said, she also mentioned that she is a double major currently juggling 18 credit hours amd that she plans on balancing with her extra-curricular activities.
The growth of the organization and the individuals surrounding her are the aspects of this position that Hudson says she is looking forward to the most.
“I am a pusher,” Hudson said.
She stated that she sees the potential behind all beings who may not see it in themselves. She said she will push her fellow colleagues to do better and to be greater.
She foresees the culture of the university changing and growing exponentially with newly-elected Chancellor Frank Gilliam now having officially assumed the chancellor position.
With the role of presidency comes networking with important figures that she might not have otherwise had the chance to network with. She said that these figures may include others outside of UNCG and the surrounding areas of Greensboro.
Along with all the changes SGA anticipates, senators have been planning initiatives to enhance student experience and student growth throughout this school year, accordig to Hudson.
She feels that the biggest accomplishment the association will have is restoring the students’ trust in SGA, and she stated that they are currently working on this shift.
Hudson enjoys watching students and faculty taking “selfies” and interacting with Gilliam and his wife, Jacquelea.
She sees this as being the beginning of a new era for UNCG as the students become more aware of who is making decisions on their behalf. She expects positive growth to come of this student administration bond throughout the University.
SGA plans to be the voice of the students. Hudson stressed that they will be more supportive of and visible to the student body.
