The Spartan women’s soccer team traveled to Elon this past weekend to face the Phoenix. The Spartans left victorious and earned their second shutout of the year.

Head Coach Michael Coll said, “The first half was absolutely superb in every facet of the game.” Despite second-half pressure from Elon, Coll remarked that the team remained “on point” and characterized their overall effort as “top level.”

UNCG took control of the game early and played mainly in Elon’s half of the field. Minutes before the first half finished, freshman Haydan Erck set up a free kick near the halfway line. Erck found sophomore Ava Kiss, who directed a header to the bottom left of the net, giving the Spartans the lead. Shortly after play resumed in the second half, senior Caroline Woods extended the lead to two. Woods dribbled past two defenders and slotted the ball past the goalkeeper from just outside the 18-yard box.

The Spartans are back home at the UNCG Soccer Stadium for the next two contests. They will face Coastal Carolina on Thursday, Sept. 7, at 6 p.m., followed by a Sunday game on Sept. 10 at 6 p.m. against Duke.
