A Pair of Runner-Up Performances by UNCG Golfers

The UNCG women’s and men’s golf teams had outstanding rounds this week from their top-finishing golfers, leading to strong team performances. On the women’s side, junior Grace Holcomb had a career-best tournament at the Elon Women’s Invitational to lead UNCG with a tie for second place overall. Julia Baeumken tied for eighth, Alexandra Phelps tied for 19th, and Victoria Cook and Ava Romfo rounded out the scores with 29th- and 32nd-place finishes, respectively. The women’s team took second overall. They look to continue their solid team play against 15 other teams this week in the GolfWeek Red Sky Classic in Vail, Colorado. The tournament teed off yesterday, Monday, Sept. 25, and continues until Wednesday. The leaderboard and results are available at Golfstat. After returning from their trip west, the Spartans will host the UNCG Collegiate tournament at Forest Oaks Golf Club on Oct. 9 and 10.

The men’s golf team finished in a tie for fifth out of 12 teams in the Rod Myers Invitational, which wrapped up yesterday. Senior Randall Hudson was the top player for UNCG, taking second place out of 72 golfers for the two-day tournament. Kelvin Hernandez tied for 21st for UNCG while playing as an individual, and Symon Balbin was one of the 14 players to score an eagle, which he did on the ninth hole during round three. The Spartans led all teams in birdies, notching 57 to Duke’s 56 for the tournament. The men travel to Vero Beach, Florida, for their next match, the Quail Valley Invitational hosted by Michigan State University. The tournament is on Oct. 15 and 16, and the Spartans will send individual golfers to Burlington, N.C., that same week for the Elon-hosted Phoenix Invitational before competing as a team at Bryan Park in Greensboro to finish the month.
