The UNCG Women’s Soccer team notched a conference win against favored Chattanooga last Sunday afternoon. After being behind in the possession battle during the first half, the Spartans generated an offensive attack that led to four scoring chances as the game neared halftime. They picked up where they left off when play resumed, with junior forward Caroline Woods handling a pass from junior defender Hailey Faubion with one touch and drilling a shot to the upper net from 18 yards just two minutes into the second half.

Just six minutes later, Woods jumped on a clearance attempt by Chattanooga and scored a long goal to put the Spartans up 2-0. The Spartans held steady for the next 17 minutes until a defensive miscue led to their lead being cut in half. That’s where the scoring would end for the opposition, and the Spartans closed out the win. Woods remains the team’s leading scorer on the season after tallying her fourth and fifth goals, and Faubion got her first assist. Senior Hannah Morton and sophomore Taylor Mentzer each contributed two shots on goal. Sophomore goalie Emma Malone allowed fewer than two goals for the eleventh time in the season, saving three of the four scoring chances she faced. The UNCG women outshot Chattanooga to surpass their season averages for shots and goals as they improved to 6-9-2.

The Spartans close out homecoming with their final home game against Virginia Military Institute at the UNCG Soccer Stadium on Sunday, Oct. 22 at 2 p.m. The game is the team’s senior day and coincides with the weekend inductions of the 1996 and 1998 women’s soccer teams and four former women’s soccer athletes to the UNCG Athletics Hall of Fame.
