As the fall sports season winds down, UNCG teams have completed or are preparing for conference championships. The women’s and men’s cross country teams competed in the Southern Conference (SoCon) championships last Friday in Kernersville, with the women’s team taking sixth place and the men finishing seventh. Senior Jenna Reiter led the way for the women, coming across the line 27th overall, while Junior Ethan Long paced the men with a ninth-place finish. Long also earned a spot on the all-conference second team.
Women’s soccer competed in their SoCon tournament, nearly overcoming a two-goal halftime deficit against Furman University. After tying the game late in regulation, the two teams played two scoreless overtime periods before heading to penalty kicks. Furman netted more shootout goals to end the Spartans’ season. The men’s soccer team heads to Johnson City, Tennessee, for a Friday match against Mercer University to begin their tournament play.
Both golf teams are wrapping up the first half of their seasons before play resumes in February, leading to their conference championships in April. The women began competing at the French Broad Collegiate Invitational yesterday and finished the first day tied for fifth. Their tournament continued this morning with 9:30 a.m. tee times. The men hosted the Bryan National Collegiate Invitational on Sunday and Monday and won the tournament on the strength of the best team score in program history. Their 21-under-par performance in the third round was a UNCG men’s golf record and carried them past runner-up Elon University by 33 strokes.
Like the golf teams, both tennis teams have seen some competitive action throughout the fall, which will continue through November before their primary season begins in February. Women’s volleyball rounds out the fall sports teams, with their SoCon tournament starting in Spartanburg, South Carolina, on November 17.
With the winter season approaching, the women’s and men’s basketball teams are gearing up for their first action of the 2023-24 season. The women tip off against Appalachian State on Monday, Nov. 6, and the men take on North Carolina A&T at the Greensboro Coliseum on Friday, Nov. 10. The men’s game begins at 7 p.m., with a “Storm the Streets” celebration at the UNCG Baseball Stadium at 4:30. The pre-game party is free to attend, with food, prizes, and free shirts for the first 1,000 UNCG students. Fans can get into the women’s home opener at the Fleming Gymnasium for free starting at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 11. The game starts at noon, and UNCG fans can support the team by wearing their white UNCG apparel to participate in the white out.
