UNCG Volleyball held the Greensboro Invitational tournament against Tennessee Tech, Georgetown, and Marshall as a precursor to their SoCon season opener against East Tennessee State University this week. The tournament took place over two days, Friday and Saturday, Sept. 20-21, in the Fleming Gym.
Our first opponent of the weekend was Tennessee Tech. There was not much to separate the sides during the first set, which ended 25 – 23 in favor of Tennessee Tech. They followed this with a more commanding performance in the second set, which finished 25 – 15, again for Tennessee Tech.
With this momentum, it was fair to assume that Tenn Tech would take the third set and the match, but our UNCG Spartans were able to put on an impressive performance. They won the third set 25 – 16 and sent the match into set four.
Our Spartans were unable to take the game further, however, losing the fourth set 25 – 22. This gave UNCG their first loss of the invitational.
UNCG faced Georgetown later that same day. The first two sets of the match ended in wins for UNCG, with scores of 25 – 20 and 25 – 22 respectively. Georgetown was able to pull one back in the third set, 27 – 25. UNCG was able to rally from this setback to win the fourth and final set of the game 25 – 17. This gave UNCG a 3 – 1 win in their second game of the invitational!
UNCG’s final game of the invitational was on the second day against Marshall. This was the most attended match of the weekend, and, despite strong moments from UNCG, it ended with a final score of 3-0 in favor of Marshall. They were dominant in all three sets, UNCG only scoring 16, 19, and 14 in the respective sets.
UNCG Volleyball will be back in action on Thursday, Sept. 26 in their SoCon season opener against ETSU. They will be back home in the Fleming Gym the following Saturday for their 5 p.m. match against Furman!
