Four home games were on the schedule this week. We saw our UNCG Men’s Basketball take on East Tennessee State University and Wofford while the Women’s Basketball team was tasked with beating Mercer and Samford.

First up on the schedule was men’s basketball, taking on ETSU at Fleming Gym on Wednesday, Jan. 29. UNCG was able to narrowly win this game with a final scoreline of 70-65 in front of an electric crowd with over 1,500 in attendance. Kenyon Giles’s 3-pointer and layup in the final minute of the game proved to be the difference between the two sides.

The win, at the time, took UNCG top of the Southern Conference (SoCon) table alongside Samford with a record of 7-2.
The following day, on Jan.30, UNCG Women’s Basketball faced off against Mercer in what proved to be a routine victory. UNCG claimed the lead early in the first quarter and never relinquished it. The Spartans won with a final score of 70-37. Nya Smith led the team in points, with 13. Khalis Cain, on the other side of the court, led the team in rebounds, accumulating 17!
UNCG Women’s Basketball was in action again on Saturday, Feb. 1, against Samford. The match was much closer than that of midweek, but UNCG was still able to record the win 78-66. With this result, our women’s team is still unbeaten at home this season with 11 games won! Nya Smith was, once again, a standout performer on the day, recording 22 points.

That win takes UNCG Women’s Basketball joint top of the SoCon standings with Wofford as they both have a record of 6-1 as of Feb. 2.
To close out the weekend, UNCG Men’s Basketball faced up against Wofford at First Horizon Coliseum later that same Saturday. The Terriers were coming in on a two-game losing streak, while the Spartans had a two-game winning streak.
However, statistics and trends aren’t everything, and the Terriers proved that on the day. Wofford was able to defeat the Spartans 74-62. Corey Tripp recorded 18 points for Wofford which was matched by Ronald Polite III for UNCG.

The result worsened UNCG’s record to 7-3 in SoCon, and they are now sitting behind Samford (8-2) and Chattanooga (7-3).
UNCG Men’s Basketball has an away trip and a chance to improve their record against The Citadel (0-10) on Wednesday, Feb. 5. UNCG Women’s Basketball also has an away trip this Thursday against Chattanooga (5-2).
