The Philadelphia Eagles, led by Jalen Hurts, were able to claim their second Super Bowl Championship on Sunday, Feb. 9, with a final score of 40 – 22 against the Kansas City Chiefs. It was a dominant performance from the Eagles, who scored 24 points by half-time with no response from Mahomes and company.
Jalen Hurts was the MVP for this year’s Super Bowl, and rightfully so. Hurts led his team in passing yards with 221 and threw two touchdown passes. He also had 11 carries throughout the game for 72 yards total – including a touchdown. Especially notable was his 46-yard pass into the endzone to DeVonta Smith. Hurts was supported by a defensive masterclass which proved too much for Kansas City.
On the other hand, the Chiefs left a lot to be desired in their three-peat attempt. As mentioned before, there wasn’t much of a fight in the first half of the game, and the Chiefs were forced to punt five times out of their first seven drives. The other two drives ended in interceptions, which led to touchdowns for the Eagles. In the second quarter, Patrick Mahomes threw a pass intended for DeAndre Hopkins which was intercepted by Cooper DeJean who was able to run 38 yards and score a touchdown for the Eagles. The Chiefs didn’t even cross midfield until their 10th drive.
The Chiefs didn’t get on the board until the end of the third quarter, courtesy of Mahomes’s pass to Xavier Worthy. Patrick Mahomes did finish the game with three touchdown passes and completed 21 of 32 for 257 yards. However, Mahomes was sacked six times, the most in his entire career, and threw two interceptions. The success that Mahomes found in the second half was when the game was already long gone.
The last time that the Eagles won the Super Bowl was in 2018, and the last time that they made a Super Bowl appearance was in 2023 against the Kansas City Chiefs. This rematch victory is now all the sweeter for Philadelphia because the Chiefs failed to win their third championship in a row.
