Making Connections: Art, Place, and Relationships

2nd Floor: The Gregory D. Ivy Gallery, Weatherspoon Guild Gallery, and Gallery 6

September 14, 2024 – December 6, 2025

Following the success last academic year of the collection exhibition, Making Room: Familiar Art, New Stories is Making Connections: Art, Place, and Relationships. Building on the museum’s desire to engage its audiences in more personal and meaningful ways, this installation of works from the collection showcases the Weatherspoon as an academic museum with deep connections to and relationships with its campus, Greensboro, and broader communities.

Back in 1941, the Weatherspoon was founded with the goal of serving as a teaching resource specifically for UNCG’s Department of Art. Over the course of its 80+ years, the museum’s mission has expanded to serve many more. Objects included in this iteration of collection highlights showcase the Weatherspoon’s relationship over the years with various art collectors, UNCG fine art alumni and faculty, Greensboro community leaders, artists who taught at Black Mountain College and those who exhibited in the museum’s signature exhibition, Art on Paper, as well as a few of the many UNCG departments that currently incorporate the museum’s collection into their pedagogy.

Conversations in Black: History and Remembrance in the City of Greensboro

1st Floor: Space for Engagement

August 9, 2025 – December 13, 2025

What might be lost if we don’t capture the living memories that are still present with people? —B. Bernetiae Reed, historian

These words, and the documentarian sentiment that animates them, are the driving force behind the ongoing collaborative project, Conversations in Black. A shared approach to memory keeping, Conversations in Black seeks to digitize historical photographs and ephemera submitted by long-time Black residents of Greensboro and to make this content widely accessible to broaden everyone’s knowledge of the city’s rich heritage.

The photographs on view here were selected from that project for their connections to the exhibition Fighters for Freedom: William H. Johnson Picturing Justice. Like the themes highlighted in that show, these photographs depict cultural figures, educators and scientists, political leaders, and everyday people whose civic service shaped the city. Drawn from community-contributed collections, they provide entry points for conversations about recent Greensboro history. We invite visitors to contribute to this record and leave their mark by sharing their own stories as well.

This exhibition is presented in collaboration with Conversations in Black: African American History and Heritage, Greensboro, NC, and the DigitalGreensboro.org community archiving initiative.
