Millennial Moment

Why Cats rule and Dogs drool (Excessively)

I really did not grow up with pets. My parents and older sister tell me we had a fish in our first apartment, but I certainly don’t remember it.

In the days following “The Little Mermaid,” I guess my parents thought my sister would love a fish, but she never really warmed up to it because you can’t really play with a fish. And that’s because, to quote one of my favorite TV dads, Red Forman, “fish are never really alive, they’re just less dead.” And that is why, once I graduate and settle down, I will be getting a four legged pet to keep me company, and I am positive this animal will be cat rather than a dog.

I did eventually get a pet, and it was right after I moved to North Carolina, and it was a cat. Well, technically, it was just the neighbor’s outdoor cat, and he would come over to our backyard almost daily.

And it was during this period, that I decided to get a cat someday. You see, after a long day of work and class, I want to relax and chill when I get home. And that is exactly all a cat does! So it would be like having another me around, except a lot shorter and furrier. He may run to the door and see someone enter, but that’s it. Maybe I’m just lazy and tired, but we don’t even have to go on walks! And I’m not even going to make fetch happen. I want a pet where we can hang out together, but also be independent from each other. He can be low-key and have his string and sleep. I will have my “Seinfeld” and sports.

And because I do like my independence, this is why I can’t get a dog. When I get home from work and want to just not do anything, I really don’t want a dog tackling and getting his saliva on me. When I eventually have small children running around, I am more fearful having a dog around rather than a cat. You see, I would rather have my kids take a scratch on  the arm from a cat than a powerful gnaw from a dog. So I’m not saying dogs are bad, it’s just if you’re like me with  a more indrawn nature, I would recommend a cat.
