Imagine staying up for 24 hours straight, listening to poetry, short stories and memoirs from a unique group of people. It’s a special experience, especially for those who hold value in the beauty, strength and truth that can found in the original literature of everyday people.
And if you’re that kind of person, then the upcoming third annual Wordsomnia event at Scuppernong Books is something that you’re going to want to check out this weekend on Friday and Saturday.
Scuppernong Books is an independent book store located snug in the heart of downtown Greensboro at 304 South Elm Street.
The event will begin this Friday, April 8 at 12:00 p.m., and will end 24 hours later on Saturday, April 9 at 12:00 pm.
Readers from all around will be able to sign up for 10-minute slots, in which they will be able to read any type of original writing. It can be poetry, fiction, nonfiction, fantasy and even comedy.
There are no strict guidelines to what the attendees are allowed to read. The only requirement is that the reading is an original work. Everyone from published writers, to veteran hobbyists, to ordinary people who just happened to want to attend are welcome to come and read what they have written. And if even if you do not care to volunteer to read, the event is still open to people in the public who would like to attend just to spectate. In fact, the store encourages people to come and join the audience just to support the readers.
Another benefit created by Wordsomnia is that during the event, the store remains completely open for 24 hours, meaning that customers and event attendees will still be able to visit the store and browse their immensely vast selection of new books, used books, half-priced books, children’s books and more. Both the kitchen and bar will remain open for the majority of the event as well. And the store will even offer free coffee between the hours of 2:00 a.m. and 7:00 a.m. on Saturday morning.
There will be prizes for attendees who stay for at least 18 hours. And the owners also plan on holding a special surprise event for those attendees still present at dawn on Saturday morning – a surprise so secret that they couldn’t give any other details about it.
Wordsomnia is an event that vows to be electrifying and energetic, but to stay in league with its theme of insomnia, it also promises to exhausting and tiring.
But if you are a person who appreciates literature and the gems that can be found in the minds of life-long writers and ordinary people, then Wordsomnia is an event that you are not going to want to miss.
If you want to share your writing and truth new people, the staff over at Scuppernong encourage you to grab your sleeping bag and come stay the night. And even if you do not want to read, grab a friend and come stay for 20 minutes as others share their stories at Scuppernong Books. There will be prizes, coffee, snacks and even surprises! But most importantly, there will be a variety of people open to sharing their work and connecting with others.
If you are a person who holds any type of value in the beauty and power that exists within the world of literature, and the human culture of storytelling, then the people at Scuppernong Books encourage you to join them this weekend for Wordsomnia.
