The UNCG women’s soccer team came into the week with a 3-2-1 record, losing their last game 2-5 in an away game against Hofstra. The 2 games on the schedule for the Spartans were home matches against Liberty and William & Mary. Being that both teams were not in-conference, their results would not change the second place in-conference record the women hold on the SoCon standings.

The first game of the week was scheduled for Thursday September 8 and Liberty would end up winning the game in a 1-0 win. The first half of the game was evenly played up until the final 5 minutes of the half when the spartans slipped up on defense and allowed Liberty’s only goal of the game to the freshman Anna Roach. Throughout the first half there were a total of 11 shots, 7 taken by Liberty and 4 by UNCG. Along with a total of 6 saves in the half, with 4 by UNCG and 2 from Liberty. Also 2 corner kicks were taken, 1 by each team. The one goal scored in the game was at the 43rd minute of the half and had to have been a body blow to the Spartans spirits when going into the locker room.

The second half of the game was rather uneventful with no goals being scored on either side where there were 12 shots taken in the second half, another 7 shots by Liberty and 5 by UNCG. But only one of the shots taken were on target and that shot was from Liberty. The final stats of the game there were a total of 14 fouls in the game, 9 by Liberty and 5 by UNCG. But there were no yellow or red cards distributed in the game and only 2 offsides in the game 1 offsides by each team.

UNCG’s second game of the week is at home against William and Mary and UNCG ended up making their losing streak 3 games. The spartans ended up losing the game 2-0 with both goals being in the first half. The first half was rather exciting with a total of 15 shots, 9 from William and Mary and 6 from the spartans. Along with a total of 6 saves in the half with both teams having 3. The 2 goal scorers for William and Mary were, Sammi Grasso who scored in the 26th minute and was assisted by Mackenzie Kober and Claire Robbins. The second goal was scored by Rachel Moore in the 31st minute who was unassisted.

The second half of the game was rather boring as there were no goals scored in this half of the game. There were a total of 8 shots in the second half, 7 from William and Mary and only 1 from the spartans. But only 3 of those shots were on target and all of those shots were taken by William and Mary which means the only 3 saves of the half were from the spartans. There were only a total of 7 fouls in the whole game with with 4 coming from William and Mary and 3 from UNCG. There were no yellow or red cards given out in the game. There were 7 corner kicks taken throughout the entire game. There were 2 corner kicks taken by William and Mary, and 5 taken by the Spartans.

The spartans have a road trip for the next three games with the dates of those games ranging from Thursday September 15 to Sunday September 25. Those three games are against South Carolina University, September 15, East Carolina University, September 18, and against VMI, September 25. The game against VMI is the start of UNCG’s conference battles. The Spartans next home games are on the 30 of September and of October 2. The spartans will be going up against Wofford and Furman in those 2 games.
