The world of university sports never seems to slow down, and this spring is no exception. At UNCG, a variety of sports and corresponding events will be occurring, including but not limited to basketball, baseball, softball, tennis and track and field! As for professional sports, we have the NFL playoffs and Super bowl, the Australian Open in professional tennis, and the Masters in professional men’s golf!

The 2016-17 season for our men’s basketball team has gotten off to a strong start, with a record of 14-5 and 5-1 in SoCon play, tying Chattanooga for tops in the conference. The Spartans have already hosted and defeated the Mocs, leaving only one more game between the two in Tennessee in February. The rest of January has the Spartans play on weekend home matches at the Coliseum before playing five of their first six games in February on the road.

With the baseball season officially kicking off on Friday, Feb. 17, with a weekend series against South Carolina. The next Friday will see the Spartans’ home opener against Michigan State and begin a 17 game home streak for the next month. The team hopes to continue off of last season’s 38 wins and second place spot in the SoCon regular season standings.

Softball kicks off a week earlier than baseball, on Friday, Feb. 10. With the recent addition of Jasmine Palmer, a sophomore utility player from Florida State, and some exciting matchups this season, it should be an entertaining schedule and group of girls to watch! Some of the matchups include North Carolina, Tennessee, and Coastal Carolina.

For the men’s and women’s tennis teams, their springs seasons both get started this weekend, with the women travelling to Chapel Hill to take on Ball State and UNC Chapel Hill, while the Men will play host to Troy on Sunday. This will be the only home match for the men until the last week of February. The women’s home schedule will begin the follow week, when they host UNC Asheville on Saturday afternoon.

As for UNCG track and field, their season has already started! They had the Virginia Tech Invitational last Friday – Saturday. This Saturday they have an event as well, the Wake Forest Invitational in Winston-Salem. Make sure you get out and support your fellow track and field Spartans as they participate in their events.

For the golf teams, the month of February will see a renewal of their 2016-17 season, with the men traveling to Rio Grande, Puerto Rico for the Puerto Rico Classic to open up their Spring season. The team will be traveling all around the country and state, but will not hold any tournaments locally. The women, the week of March 31-April 2, will compete here in Greensboro at Bryan Park. Their season tees off Feb. 5 with the Lady Bulldogs Individual in Athens, GA.

In the world of professional football, the NFL Postseason comes to a conclusion on Feb. 5 in Houston, TX with Super Bowl 51.

The first major, the Australian Open, is coming up in the upcoming weeks for professional men’s tennis. It’ll be on January 16th through the 29th. With a major lasting this long, you can catch matchups and updates all day long.

In the world of men’s professional golf, the first major of the year will be held April 3-9. People are already excited for this major and it isn’t even until April! With Tiger Woods back on the scene and plenty of your usual stars being featured, it’ll be a fun, memorable event. With the recent shakeup of the PGA rankings, it’ll definitely be competitive.

With all of these events, both collegiate and professional, it’ll be an exciting next few months. With a variety of sports and athletes to watch, there’s an infinite amount of coverage to look forward to!
