A week and two days after closing, the Greensboro staple for hot dogs and ice cream, Yum Yum Better Ice Cream, has opened its doors back to the public.
Yum Yum was closed after an incident was reported at 1:42 p.m. of a vehicle running into the side of the building on Wednesday, March 15. The accident took place after a woman attempted to reverse out of the parking lot but the vehicle was in drive instead.
The first responders were called and no injuries were reported. Along with the EMS, the city inspection department came as well.
“The building inspector came out and he was afraid that if the wall fell down, it would take the roof trusses with it and it would pull everything down,” said Clint Aydelette, second Vice President of Yum Yum. “So of course, he had to condemn the building until our inspectors got the okay.”
With the help of Marion Electric and Brady Electric per, Jeff Triplett and Home Restorations of the Carolinas, and Pat Rose, City of Greensboro Electrical Inspector, the restoration process is moving along smoothly.
The accident damaged the ice cream production room, with restoration not yet completed.
“We won’t be able to make ice cream until we are completely finished in the back,” Aydelette said. “Hopefully it will take about a week and a half. We made ice cream before the wreck so hopefully we will have enough to carry us through but if not, we will deal with it then.”
Yum Yum has been in operation since 1906, after being opened by Aydelette’s grandfather, W. B. Aydelette, Sr. The business has been located in the heart of UNCG on Spring Garden Street since 1974 and has become a tradition among UNCG students.
Customers were thrilled for the reopening of Yum Yums. Besides the famous food, the atmosphere is hard to beat.
Lauren Daniels, a freshman at UNCG, is a fairly frequent Yum Yum customer, visiting every one to two weeks to get her go-to order of two hotdogs with ketchup and hot sauce.
“There’s a little hotdog place back at home that I go to all the time and Yum Yum’s is just like it,” Daniels said. “It gives me that hometown, southern feeling that I grew up knowing. Plus it’s a cute relaxed date place to go. Luke, my boyfriend, and I go there every time he comes to visit.”
Yum Yum Better Ice Cream is back to operating on its summer schedule hours: Monday and Saturday 10:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., Tuesday through Friday 10:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. and closed on Sundays. Full repairs are estimated to be completed in a time span of a week and a half.
