UNCG sports have been busy since our last article before the winter break, so here are a few highlights of what’s happened since our previous issue.

  • The Southern Conference announced that 31 UNCG athletes made the Fall 2023 Academic All-Southern Conference team. UNCG broke the conference record for overall GPA, averaging 3.40, as all 13 fall teams maintained a 3.00 or higher for the semester. The teams with students selected for their GPAs included Volleyball, Women’s Soccer and Cross Country, and Men’s Soccer and Cross Country. Congratulations to all our scholar-athletes!
  • The Women’s Basketball team had some great wins and tough losses over the break but are at 14-7 overall with a 3-3 conference record. They are particularly dominant at home, where they’ve won 12 games and only lost one. Their next game is this Saturday, Feb. 3, at Western Carolina. The Men’s Basketball team saw their four-game winning streak snapped on Saturday against Mercer but still sits at 15-6 with an impressive 6-2 conference record. Like the women, the men have only lost one home game, with nine wins between Fleming Gymnasium and the Greensboro Coliseum. They travel to Lexington, Virginia, to take on VMI this Wednesday, Jan. 31.
  • Women’s Tennis had their home opener on Sunday at the Piedmont Indoor Tennis Center. Despite several strong rallies in singles and many close matches, they fell to Campbell by a score of 7 to 0. The team travels to Wyoming this week for Friday and Saturday matches against Wyoming and Colorado. Men’s Tennis kicks off their season this Thursday, Feb. 1, at the UNCG Tennis Courts against Belmont Abbey.
  • The indoor track season resumed on Jan. 12 at The Burg Open at Liberty University. Ten UNCG athletes set personal bests, including Andrew Hamilton, who won the 800-meter race at 1:57.02. UNCG also took second, fourth, and sixth in the event. Two men finished in the top 10 in the 3000-meter run, while four women did the same, with Vicky Sosa taking second overall with a personal best of 10:32.87. The Spartans duplicated their personal-best feats at the Mondo Invitational the next day, with strong team performances in the women’s mile and men’s 800 meters, 1000 meters, and mile. The Camel City Invitational in Winston-Salem on Jan. 26-27 was another meet full of personal bests. Vicky Sosa set hers in the 3000 meters, putting her in the UNCG all-time top 10 for the event. Jenna Reiter, Camille Carlson, and Kaitlyn Harrison all had their best mile races. Peyton Wilson ran her fastest 400 meters, and Kiarrah Williams set hers in the 60 meters. For the men, three of the four Spartan runners in the 3000 meters had their personal bests: Khalid Abdullahi, Evan Pena, and JT Brownlee. The track teams return to Liberty University for the Liberty Open this Saturday, Feb. 3.
