Democrats Make Major Gains in North Carolina Midterm Elections

North Carolina Democrats made significant gains in Tuesday’s midterm elections, flipping a U.S. Senate seat and appearing poised to take control of the state House of Representatives for the first time since 2010.

Former Democratic Gov. Roy Cooper defeated Republican Michael Whatley in the race to replace retiring U.S. Sen. Thom Tillis. Cooper’s victory marks a major pickup for Democrats, who also secured control of both chambers of Congress nationally.

At the state level, Democrats appear to have won a majority in the N.C. House, defeating several Republican incumbents. They also gained seats in the N.C. Senate, ending Republicans’ veto-proof majority in that chamber.

Among the notable upsets, Democrat Jen Wiles defeated seven-term Republican incumbent Donny Lambeth in Forsyth County, according to unofficial election results.

Election results remain unofficial pending certification by county boards of elections. North Carolina counties are scheduled to certify results Nov. 13.
