As President Barack Hussein Obama’s time in the White House is coming to an end, many have taken the past couple of weeks to reflect on his last eight years in office. Many will remember his time in a positive light, and some may choose not to.
During the end of a president’s term the public wonders what will be the legacy of that president and how will we remember him. Was he a good president? And most importantly, did he make good on all the promises he made while in office?
When it comes to President Obama it is not as black and white as it may initially seem.
Many people do not believe that President Barack Obama achieved the things he thought he would while holding the presidential office. In plenty of ways, that is true. President Obama did not achieve some things he said he would. However, there is a clear reason as to why.
Throughout Obama’s time as president he has had to deal with one relentless obstacle in his path: Republicans.
From the day Obama took office during his first term Republicans have made it their mission to make sure that President Obama would achieve absolutely nothing when trying to give what he promised the people that voted for him.
This was a decision made by the Republicans that has extremely affected the country. Unfortunately, they managed to keep enough seats in congress the past eight years to be needed when passing legislation.
Many of you may be wondering, why the Republicans would do this, especially if a lot of the things Obama has proposed would benefit so many people?
The simple answer is that they wanted to taint the image of President Obama so that people that don’t keep up with politics would come to an incorrect conclusion that the President hasn’t done anything. They wanted people to believe that he was a liar and taking advantage of their vote because he didn’t come through with his promises.
And according to the 2016 election, it worked. I have heard plenty of people say, “Obama hasn’t done anything”. Little do they know it is because of the people that they voted for in revenge of Obama and the fellow democrats also pushed in out in this election.
Maybe President Obama didn’t achieve all the promises he made, but it definitely was not because of a lack of trying. He tried his hardest, but a selfish agenda made by the main opposing political party stood in his way.
President Obama will go down as one of the favorites of all time, especially among young people in the United States and around the world. He brought a effortlessness and common man attitude to his presidency that made him so relatable. He was one of us and it never seemed like he thought otherwise.
Obama also has been able to lighten up and not taken everything too seriously. He has made incredible and hilarious videos with Buzzfeed, made appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, and has made more than enough awful dad jokes to go around.
Obama will also be remembered as an amazing family man. People absolutely adore First Lady Michelle Obama and their two children, Malia and Sasha Obama. The first family has done something that most families never do while in the White House, leave scandal free. This has just made them all so much more lovable and personable.
It is very clear that President Obama was a socially successful president and won the hearts of Americans during his term in office.
Obama also did plenty of good things for the country, especially economically. He increased the countries jobs after receiving the presidency during one of the most challenging times the country has ever seen economically and has decreased the unemployment rate to 4.7 percent.
Of course, one of the biggest and more controversial things to be cemented in President Obama’s legacy (whether or not you like it) is the Affordable Care Act also known as “Obamacare”. This act has allowed so many people with pre-existing conditions, with low means of income, and with so many other personal issues to have access to healthcare no matter what.
In a recent town hall taking place on January 12, 2017 with current Speaker of the House Paul Ryan, a lifelong Republican spoke up. He was battling a curable cancer, given only six weeks to live and he could not afford to take care of the expenses. He credited the Affordable Care Act and President Obama with saving his life, as without Obama and Obamacare, he would have died.
President Barack Obama will go down as an amazing president because he was. He worked so hard for eight years to help those among us who despised him and those who loved him. He was a fighter for the American people, and we are so proud of him. We have been given so much hope these past eight years, and he has assured us that as long as we work together, yes we can.
And so he did.
