Rocky Horror experience

On Friday, Nov. 6 and Saturday, Nov. 7, Mary Foust hosted their adaptation of the infamous cult classic — Rocky Horror Picture Show.

If someone were to walk into Mary Foust Saturday night around 7 p.m., they would see several people in the hallway dressed only in their undergarments, with one or two of those people carrying a huge, floppy sex toy in their hands.

Before entering the show, anyone who hasn’t seen The Rocky Horror Picture Show before had the mark of a “V” for virgin written on their hand in bold marker.

The virgins knew they were getting into something completely outlandish, but none of them, this writer included, could have anticipated what would happen next.

At the beginning of the show, all of the “virgins” were subjugated to line up randomly in a fashion so one’s toe touches their partner’s heel. In other words, crotch to butt, and, once they were all lined up nice and tight, the humiliated bunch of “virgins” were directed to performed a short, obscene dance while counting from 67 to 69.

The ritualistic dance was a simple three-step process consisting with two winding rotations of the hips as audience members shouted along in counting down to 69.

The dance finished with a hard pelvic thrust on the number 69. The frigid virgins were asked to sit after the ritual and watch in confusion.

The show consists of a reenactment of the movie (which played on a screen in the background), full of Mary Foust residents with a lip sync of the movie.

Cast members in the back of the room shouted absurd and crude remarks satirizing the characters of their movie; this was most frequently done in shouting “slut” after a scene with Janet, and “asshole” after a scene with Brad.

These brash and more often than not lascivious statements had the audience reeling back and forth in their chairs with laughter.

It was truly a room of pure madness. There were chaotic chases circulating the room, constant crude jeers directed at the movie and a hysterical, fake sex scene. The “virgins” could not have asked for a more confusing display of sexual based humor.

Pierce Rogers was one of the “virgins” who saw the show for the first time Saturday night, and said he was a bit distracted by the constant flow of jeers at the projection screen. The “virgins” had some trouble actually watching the movie, but it was mainly about the performance itself rather than the movie.

The night was hectic and confusing, but many laughs were shared — no matter if the movie’s plot was understood.

Throughout the chaos of the show, the cast also interacted with audience members in targeting a random person to convey improvised, obscenely comedic gestures.

One cast member sat on a viewer’s lap, touching her hair while the show continued to plays in the background.  Anything could happen, and no one in the audience was safe.

Mary Foust puts on this production annually and takes much pride in producing the show, spending two months to prepare.

Samata Allen, a cast member, said his favorite part of the show was when his character Riff Raff, the butler, barged into the room with a nerf gun while striking a threatening pose at his master, who he would betray. “It was good, a lot better tonight. It feels good to get laughs like that,” said Samata.

The atmosphere of the show was certainly light-hearted, as the cast and returning Rocky-goers enjoyed satirizing their beloved movie through shouting specific lines at the screen.

The show included humor based around the movie, which made it difficult for first time movie watchers to understand the plot of the movie.

It is highly recommended for Rocky Horror Picture Show fans that have seen the movie multiple times to come and watch it with Mary Foust, because many of the jokes focused on making fun of all of the characters.

What at times seemed like offensive, vicious attacks on these characters, was meant to be a comedic style of endearment. While children were allowed to come to the show, it was not advised for obvious reasons.

At the end of the show, audience members were selected in a raffle to come on stage and eat a pair of gummy boobs off of any part of a selected cast member’s body.  This writer was among the audience raffled to eat the gummies off of the top of a cast member’s behind.

While ridiculous and embarrassing, it upholds one of the traditions of Mary Foust’s annual production.
